Mobile Marketing – Understand the Technology

For the last 5 years or so we have heard nothing but mobile marketing is the future, it is coming, it will be bigger than the internet. Because of this many latched on to the idea that send SMS messages was the answer to all their marketing needs. The problem was that the consumer soon got sick of this and because of the electronic communication act it meant that sending out unsolicited text messages was against the law.

Company after company set up SMS services and were under cut by the main players quickly realising there was little in the way of profit to be made in the send of SMS messages but maybe in the area of managing the accounts.

On top of this lots of companies signed up to have their own premium rate text service only to realise that soon a lot of companies would offer the same type of service but for free.

All of the above is fine and there is still plenty of money to make in the SMS messaging business if you do it right, as there is for running your own premium rate SMS service. But if this is the limit of you mobile marketing plans, ideas or strategy you are missing the major bigger picture.

Internet on the Move

Mobile phones today are more versatile multi media devices. In the future you will be able to watch entire movies, TV or adverts which you can to some degree now. You are already able to surf the net and check youfacebook profile or even have an alert sent to you via text every time you get an email from your friends.

Now think of all this technology from a marketing point of view and you have an entire world of exciting opportunities ahead.

Well you might say “well if I have a website already then users could search that using their mobile so I am already there” but how sure of this are you.

Usability of Website on Mobiles

Websites designed to be navigated via mobile phones need to think of the user and the amount of available screen space that these would have to view the said website.

Add to this the fact that mobile phone websites tend to be writing in different programming language to standard websites then you may have new design issues to deal with.
