Search Engine Marketing and Optimisation top tips

Things to do and not do

Do:

  • Set out an online marketing strategy
  • A quality linking strategy is a must
  • Website regularly updated
  • Use pay per click and social network advertising
  • Social network marketing
  • Put your keywords in your domain name and url
  • Make sure your keywords are in your title tags no more than 60 characters
  • Put your keywords in the titles in the content of your page
  • Keywords need to be found in your meta tag description with a clear call to action
  • keywords in your keyword meta tags, although these are not worth spending too much time on as they are seldom if ever used – but better to have than not
  • Keywords found in content of page
  • Keywords in close proximity on the page
  • Keyword density on the page should be 2%-20%, whilst individual keyword density should be 1%
  • Keywords on page should be found in h1, h2 and h3
  • Emphasis on keywords in italic, bold and so on
  • Keywords in the order they will be typed into the search engine
  • Keywords in prominent position on the page
  • Internal links optimised for keywords
  • Every page of the website optimised individually
  • Have no broken links on the page
  • Include a sitemap

Do not

  • Don’t use link farms
  • Don’t use automatic page creators and updaters to make it look like you are regularly updating your website
  • Don’t overfill your title tags
  • Don’t use the same title tag for every page
  • Don’t overfill your meta tags with SPAM
  • DO NOT overfill your page with keywords
  • Do not hide your website content using same font colour as background colour as this is SPAMMING known as cloaking
  • Do not use text that is too small to read to fill the page with keywords
  • Flash looks nice but does nothing for your search engine optimisation
  • Bad Robot.txt
  • Not using keywords in internal links, navigation and landing pages is a mistake
  • Frames should not be used
  • Doorway pages should not be used. Often used by bad SEO and Spammers doorway pages are pages optimised for one or two certain keywords to rank higher but are of no benefit to the surfer and simply have a link or redirect to the main website.
  • Don’t stuff your alt and description tags with keywords
  • Don’t create pointless social network pages that you then leave and have not relevance to your site other than a link, if you are going to do social network marketing do it right
  • Do not rely on the keyword meta tag as it is all but useless these days, have it in place but spend little time on it and do not spam it
  • JavaScript links are hard to follow
  • Don’t SPAM it’s not worth it in the long run
