To meta tag or not to meta tag that is the problem

Almost on a daily basis I hear someone from a web design company say that meta tagging is no longer important, so they don't bother. This is extremely frustrating for someone who spends his days redeveloping websites to make them more search engine friendly.

The problem is this is a misquote from articles that are out there on the world wide web. If you reread these articles they actually say that meta tagging is less important than it once was, but less important does not mean no longer important. We need to remember that many search engines still use them and even though meta tag keywords are meant to be unimportant to Google it doesn't mean they are unimportant to the others. The way I look at it is – if you leave them out you can't benefit but if you keep them in they do no harm and more importantly they will actually aid the search engine spiders in ranking your site.
